Our Work

The mission of BKRS is to develop a current understanding of how we are growing bull kelp in Alaska, understand the challenges and successes of current farming approaches, and develop a proof of concept for how to grow bull kelp at scale.
We are primarily focused on conducting research, coordinating the sharing of information, and developing resources to help researchers and farms better understand and compare their outcomes.

-
Openly sharing farm and experimental designs and goals
-
Developing a list of successes and challenges for what is/is not working in bull kelp farmingIdentifying yearly research priorities
-
Developing the 1st draft of an SOP for Bull Kelp farm/research monitoring
-
Submitting collaborative proposals for AFDF Joint Innovation Project Funding
Additionally, in November 2024, we held the first Growing Bull Kelp Workshop in Kodiak, AK from November 12-13, 2024.
Our work is ongoing, and we look forward to sharing more about what we know about growing bull kelp.
